It’s Been a While

It’s been a while since I’ve posted to this blog. A lot of change has happened over the past few years, and it was kind of bizarre coming back here — I’d almost forgot I had this blog. I’ve been busy developing a Life Coaching career and building a web site for that, and now I’m wondering what to do with this one. Do I post only on the business blog? Do I post personal stuff there at all?

I guess I’ll see how it goes, but I wanted to update this one and poke my foot into the sand at least. There’s a lot I could write about here. I’ve been getting into bullet journaling recently and would love to post some videos of my journals. Also I’ve been collecting tarot decks and might just post weekly draws here.

Fun Facts about Cheese

“Cheese.”

OK then. I spent 45 minutes while the kids are in  karate reading about cheese, and learning all sorts of bizarre facts about cheese, and now I’m going to share things about cheese with you so that my life has some meaning. So here you go: ten fun facts about cheese:

  1. Stinky feet and stinky cheese gain their scent from the same bacterium: Brevibacterium Linens.
  2. There is a Sardinian delicacy called “Maggot Cheese.” According to the web site Oddee.com, “Locals consider it unsafe to eat casu marzu once the larvae have died, so it is served while the translucent white worms, about one-third of an inch long, are still squiggling. Some people clear the maggots from the cheese before consuming it, while others do not. Those who leave the maggots may have to cover the cheese with their hands—when disturbed, the maggots can jump up to six inches.”
  3. The name for someone who likes cheese is  a”turophile”
  4. According to www.cheese.com, there are over 700 types of cheeses around the world.
  5. Richard Cheese has done a VERY BAD COVER of Enter Sandman by Metallica
  6. Someone has actually tried to crochet with string cheese

I was sitting at the Jiffy Lube spa the other day in a warm patch of sun reading about breathing — specifically the function of the breath in the martial arts — and realizing, rather humbly, that despite two degrees and at least a modicum of still functioning grey matter, I do not know how to breathe.

In a physical conflict, once you factor out or do the rolls (geek alert!) for skill and strength, the person who is able to assess and process the situation the quickest will win. This is not just one bit of thinking, but a constant, quick series of high-information algorithms, and because we’re not robots, it takes oxygen to power all that brain functioning. If you’re tense and not breathing properly, you deny your brain the fuel it needs to work, and it will just shrug its little synapses and hand your body over to the lower-level “fight or flight” response. Meanwhile, somebody else has probably punched you in the face. The best thing you can do is relax and breathe — which of course is easier said than done. The whole point of training is to get your mind, body, and spirit working together instead of freaking out in a little oxygenless cloud of desperation.

How do you take this out of the dojo and into “real life” where conflicts are likely not physical? Maybe you don’t think you’re fighting, but yeah — you are. In writing, conflict is what happens when two interacting characters or entities don’t want the same thing. And what two souls ever want the same thing at the same time? When are we ever even truly at peace with ourselves?

Every moment is a turning point, a moment of choice where there is a potential right action, or a fight or flight response.

Train. Breathe. Relax.

Transformation Soup

dreams4smThis week I’ve been thinking about transformation. Transformation is hard, and even though we talk about it a lot this time of year in a positive way in reality we have a really odd relationship with it. We see it in our children, but it’s bittersweet: “he’s growing up so fast — pretty soon he’ll be gone.” We see it in others, and we get jealous. We see it in ourselves, but usually through the lens of “not enough.” What the heck is our problem?

Maybe we just don’t get it, or maybe it’s just a conflict with our basic animal homeostatic desire to keep things exactly the same as they are. Maybe the freaking butterfly has ruined it for us — it’s way too easy to spot an image of the final result and then hide ourselves away until we’re that thing, whether it’s an image of success, style, or body image. Our educational system is all about setting up a straw dog of perfection and then expecting our kids to work towards an ideal that probably isn’t even a viable form of humanity. It’s all about perfection, being smart enough, thin enough, social enough. And it never ends. We think if we can control things, we can guarantee the results we want.

But transformation, really, isn’t about control. You can’t even control your own journey, never mind someone else’s. It’s really hard to grasp that. You can’t even control a little tiny bit of it. People sort of get that, except that you’re somehow supposed to LOOK like you have control of things, especially your kids. Like it’s a chemical reaction and you’re wearing your white coat. Want your kids to be responsible? Make chore charts. Want them to appreciate music? Make them play an instrument.

I gave up on the chore chart a while back, after working with the thought “my children should help around the house.” (BITCHSLAP, if you’ve read that post.) Damn that Byron Katie. She should come wash my dishes. But really, let’s be honest. I want someone to wash the dishes? I just ask them. I say please. Not because they should, but the only real truth there is “I’d like you to wash the dishes.” Lest this seem beatific, I will occasionally say “I will go FUCKING POSTAL if you don’t help me out RIGHT NOW,” but that’s just honest.

Forget wings. I would love to transform into someone with perpetually clean dishes. Though, frankly, if I had to come up with a superpower it would likely be something way more amusing, like the ability to levitate cheese or make people fart (and yes, superpowers would be wasted on me, I know that).

Doing this with myself is somewhat harder, because at any particular moment in my journey the truth is not necessarily ideal or convenient. Right now, I don’t want to work out, and I don’t want to do the dishes. The dog wants me to bring her out to pee and my son wants me to order him something or other on Amazon. Being in the present and trying to get a sense of what it would feel like to be that butterfly is difficult, because it’s totally, absolutely impossible. We don’t get to do that, and certainly caterpillars don’t get to do that. They turn into total self-digesting soup when they’re in their cocoons, probably thinking something along the line of “HOLY FUCKING SHIT, I’M GOING TO DIIIIIEEEEEEEE.”

Martha Beck’s perspective on transformation is that the first step is saying to yourself “it’s chaos, but that’s ok.” Yeah, I guess. Sometimes you need to just roll yourself in a blanket and wait it out. But really, coded in that once-and-future glop is everything you need to be your perfect self — whatever that is. Trying to control the future is hopeless. Eventually, the cocoons hatch, the grass grows, and you stretch inside your blanket. Maybe the boy will even do the dishes.
